Our latest crowdfund is particularly exciting as we’re not just raising money to generate clean solar energy, but also to provide solar storage. With your help, we seek to raise funds to purchase and operate a state-of-the-art 100kW Tesla battery. This is one of the UK’s first battery deployments to come out of Elon Musk’s battery ‘gigafactory’ in Nevada. The factory is named after its planned annual battery production capacity of 35 gigawatt-hours (GWh). The battery, designed for efficiency and long-life, provides 100kW peak capacity with 170kWh energy storage. It also offers smart energy features such as shifting energy consumption times to enable price optimisation, and emergency backup.
We’re working on this project with our partner, Bristol-based start-up CEPRO (Clean Energy Prospector). CEPRO is currently managing a number of innovative energy schemes, one of which is pilot with a sustainable housing development. Therefore, we have the opportunity to purchase and operate this 100kW Tesla battery at a new HAB Housing site in Winchester. The scheme would cost approximately £150,000.
Solar and battery storage is a real game-changer in our journey to tackle climate change. Solar is already becoming competitive with fossil fuels; it is cheaper than coal in many parts of the world, and according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance by 2025, solar may be cheaper than using coal on average globally.
The new battery is creating particular interest in our community. Rob Acton-Campbell, one of our investors said:
“One of the features that particularly attracted me to this offer was the proposed battery storage project. It seems to me that small scale local generation together with local storage must be the way ahead for electricity supply in the future.”
How to invest in a brighter future?
Our solar crowdfund will help to reduce Co2 emissions and take us another step towards a zero carbon future. It seems fitting to quote Elon Musk here:
“We must achieve a sustainable energy economy or we will run out of fossil fuels to burn and civilization will collapse.” (July, 2016)
In addition to protecting the environment, our energy projects help the local area, with all the surplus profits being returned to the community, while our investors receive a financial return.
We’ve already raised over £200,000 for our community energy projects, but we need your help to reach our £1.15m total by 31 July.
