We are inviting BEC members to join us for a free event in Bristol on Monday 2nd November from 6-8pm to share our experience retrofitting our homes and to learn from others.
If your house is cold in winter and hot in summer, you’ve probably considered some home retrofit solutions. There is so much information out there on how, when and why, it can be a bit overwhelming. Sometimes the best way to learn is to hear from other people who have done something similar. As one retrofit project across Devon and Cornwall put it: “Householders who gained confidence were far more likely to install measures.” It can also be very rewarding to share your own top tips with others, whether it’s how to prepare your house for a heat pump or sharing a nifty design for a draft excluder.
There isn’t just individual gain to be had from retrofit. As most of us know, using oil and gas to heat our homes and white goods is a lose-lose situation: expensive and bad for the planet. Leaky homes are also a national problem. Housing made up around a fifth of the UK’s total carbon emissions in 2022 and the country can’t reach its 2050 net zero target without decarbonising nearly all of its housing stock. Damp, cold homes can be unhealthy as well. According to The UK Green Building Council, illness caused by cold homes in the winter costs the NHS £1.4 billion each year.
Share and learn
If you are a BEC member interested in retrofit, we’d love to invite you to a special in-person event in Stokes Croft, Bristol, in November. Join us for advice on heat pumps, draft excluders, solar panels, insulation, damp and mould and more, and share your own top tips. We’d love to see you there.
Huge thanks to Retrofit West for supporting the event.
