Green Schools Project Community Climate Action Manager, Loz Hennessy, is having a very busy end to the summer term. She shares some of the work funded through our Megawatt Community Energy Fund.
What a perfect way to round off the busy summer term – I visited Victoria Park Primary for their pupil-directed Open Garden event. I’ve been working with the school for almost two years on their climate action plan and it was fantastic to see how the pupils have smashed their biodiversity targets with the help of the Green Schools Project.
I loved hearing how the Year 5s have mentored the Early Years children to take care of maintaining the flower planters, had a great chat with two boys about their favourite butterflies and was amazed by the thriving pond. I don’t remember seeing that the last time I visited! Wonderful!
The event included presentations by the children, displays of their work, and an opportunity to see the improvements they have been making to the school’s wildlife garden and outdoor learning space.
It was fantastic to see many parents come and look around, as well as to have guests visit from other local organisations including BS3 Wildlife Group and Bristol Climate and Nature Partnership.
Carolyn Hecker, who has been working with us in the role of Local Community Activator, came up with the original idea and helped to coordinate the event and the year 5 pupils and teachers brought it to life! The passion and enthusiasm shown by the year 5s was absolutely incredible, as they tirelessly delivered their presentations and performances to group after group of younger pupils and other visitors – the piece of theatre about different birds had me in hysterics!
