Privacy Policy


This policy, and any other documents referred to in it, sets out the basis on which we will process any personal data we collect. It does not form part of any employees’ contract of employment, and may be amended at any time. The BEC team is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Data Protection Requirements and with this policy.

1. Bristol Energy Cooperative currently collects and processes the following types of personal information:

a) BEC investor members’ names, email addresses, postal addresses, dates of birth and financial information. 

b) BEC volunteers’ or interns’ names, email addresses, postal addresses, phone numbers and personal information. 

c) BEC supporter email addresses for our newsletter. 

d) Names and email addresses of people attending BEC meetings and webinars, or responding to surveys either in person or online. 

2. How we get the personal information and why we have it:

a) We collect investor information via the investment platform Ethex under Financial Conduct Authority regulations  This information is stored securely by Ethex.

b) We collect information about volunteers and interns through our online Volunteering Form, meetings, social media and email requests.  This information is stored in a central secure database.

c) We collect supporter email addresses for our newsletter via our website sign-up page. This information is stored on Mailchimp. All newsletters have an unsubscribe link in case people change their mind about receiving them. 

d) We use Eventbrite to manage many of our events. People who submit their data through Eventbrite to attend an event agree for Eventbrite to store their data as per Eventbrite’s Terms and Conditions.

3. Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the lawful bases we rely on for processing this information are:

a) to accept and process community bond and share investments in Bristol Energy Cooperative

b) to recruit individuals to the right volunteer roles and offer them appropriate support.

c) to communicate with our supporters in order to promote and advance Community Energy projects and campaigns.

4. We will not pass personal data on to third parties, except with your consent.

5. We will keep volunteer and intern information for five years after your volunteering or internship with us ends.

6. You have the right to request a copy of the information that we hold about you. You can ask us to amend or delete your personal information or to stop using it.
